Configuration ReadyBoost

INTRODUCTION

Windows ReadyBoost Is a new feature of windows Vista. ReadyBoost can use the storage space on some removable media devices such as USB flash drives. This helps you to enhance the speed of the computer. When you insert a device into the respective port, the AutoPlay dialog box appears quickly. It provides the option to speed up the system using windows ReadyBoost. You can select this option to allocate memory of the media you want to use for this purpose.

The Devices Supported for ReadyBoost are:-

  1. USB 2.0 Flash Disk

  2. Secure Digital (SD)  cards

  3. Compact Flash Cards

Certain Universal serial Bus (USB), Storage devices include slow as well as fast flash memories. However Windows use fast flash memory to speed up your computer.

The recommended amount of memory needed for ReadyBoost acceleration is triple the amount of RAM. If the capacity of the RAM of your computer is 512 MB and you plug in a 4GB USB flash drive, then set A-side a storage space of 512 MB to 1.5 GB of That drive for the best performance boost.

For any USB flash drive, a minimum space of 256 MB, of that drive should be available for ReadyBoost.

The amount of space of the flash drive, for the uses of ReadyBoost, can be set manually. You can also enable or disable the Windows ReadyBoost feature for a specific flash drive or other removable storage device.

To Specify The Amount Of Space for ReadyBoost. :-

Plug a suitable external memory device into your computer, for example a USB. The Autoplay dialog box appears as shown in below.

Click the speed up my system icon. The USB Disk properties dialog box appears as shown inbfigure.

ReadyBoost

Click the ReadyBoost tab.

The ReadyBoost tab display the following options:-

  • Do not use this device- Click this option to turn off the ReadyBoost feature.

  • Use this device- Click this option to turn on the ReadyBoost feature.

Click the use this devices option and move the slider to choose how much space is available on the flash drive you want to reserve for ReadyBoost.

Click the Apply button.

Click OK.

The ReadyBoost feature caches the small chunks in flash memory and retrieves those chunks as per the need.

ReadyBoost Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, and 10 has a special disk cache service, which uses fast removable devices such as USB flash drives, Secure Digital and CompactFlash memory cards to speed up smaller remade disks. This can a greatly improvement Windows performance, while many random small files are read frequently, or when the computers does not have a sufficient amount of RAM. Traditional hard disk drives. Therefore you cannot use an external hard drive, for ReadyBoost. - no real performance benefit is possible.

Configuration

A suitable USB ports for ReadyBoost must at least supports the USB 2 standard, and USB 3 (SuperSpeed, Blue Port) or USB C is an even better.

You need a USB stick or memory card that has at least 250 megabytes of disk space (one to three times the RAM is strongly recommended), access time under 1 millisecond, at least 2.5 megabytes / second. Random Read Speed. Random writes speed at least 1.75 MB/S.

Windows always automatically checks the performance of removable devices, so you don't have to run these tests yourself.

In the 32 bit version of Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8. On FAT32 file system devices, you can used up to 4 Gygabytes of storage for ReadyBoost. Oldest FAT16 file systems can also be used, but the maximum caches size is limited to 2 GB.

In 64-bits Windows, up to 32 GB of caches can be created on a single NTFS formate removable drives, even if the drive itself is a large. Windows 7, 8/8.1, and 10 also support Fat file systems(cache up to 32 GB in size) for ReadyBoost.

On FAT16 and FAT32 drives, file size limitations of 2 and 4 gigabytes still apply.

If you want to use a readibost cache larger than 2 or 4 gigabytes of any data, you can convert the FAT / FAT32 drive to the NTFS file system without losing data. For detailed instructions read Disk Management in the Windows article.

While Windows Vista supports only one ReadyBoost drive at a time, Windows 7 and later allow a combination of 8 different removable devices. Therefor in 64-bit Window, you can create a readyboost caches of up to 8x32 GB, or up to 256 GB in total sizes.

The ReadyBoost caches file is always encrypted using the AES-128 algorithms to protect private data. Compression is used to cram twice as much data into a file.

Take special cares of the drive used for ReadyBoost, as forcebly removing or disconnecting its, while running Window can results in many errors (file not founds, program and app crash etc.). Always use the Safely Remove Hardware icon to remove the ReadyBoost drive properly.

If Windows is installed on an SSD (solid state drive), then ReadyBoost is automatically disabled because no performance gain is possible. You will see the ReadyBoost is not enable because, These computers is fast enough that ReadyBoost is not commonly to provide another benefit in the TabBody.

Don't expect ReadyBoost to turn on an older AMD Celeron computer in a new core i7 though. ReadyBoost not a speed up processor and RAM, it increases hard disk access times for little different read. The effects would be most noticeable when is launching large disk intensive programs like Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom, Microsoft Outlook, etc.

In additions , checks the Windows Experience Index (WEI) subscore for the primary hard disk, if the score is low, the positive effects of readyboost will be more noticeable. If your hard disk is rotated maximum or near (5.9 in Windows Vista, xp, 7.9 in Windows 7, 9.9 in Windows 8), there may be no points in using ReadyBoost. Please note that WEI is do not available in Windows 8.1 and 10, but you can still measure the performance describe in the WEI tutorial.

Please use a USB drive or memory card with at least double the RAM size capacity to better perform ReadyBoost. If your device has 4 GB of RAM, then you should select a drive with 8 or more gigabytes of disk space.

You can check the total amount of RAM in your computer using the keyboard shortcut WINDOWS KEY + PAUSE / BREAK. Alternatively, right-click (My) Computer / This PC icon on the desktop or in the Start menu and choose Properties.

For larger drives, it is strongly recommend to convert the existing FAT / FAT 32 file system to NTFS. This can be done without any data loss, but converting the conversion normally require the drive to be formatted.

Once, connect the drive you want to use for ReadyBoost. If AutoPlay / AutoRun is enabled, you can click on Speed Up My System using the Windows ReadyBoost option.

Kindly notes, this option is available even, if the drive not meet the min. requirements for readyboost.
